From 6 January to 23 February 1944, lava flows appeared within the rim and there were outflows. The activity paused on 23 February and resumed on 13 March. Small explosions then occurred until the major explosion took place on 18 March 1944 The eruption of 1906 was particularly destructive, killing over 100 people and ejecting the most lava ever recorded from a Vesuvian eruption.
Over the past few centuries, the quiet stages of a dormant Vesuvius have varied from 18 months to 7½ years, making the current lull in activity the longest in nearly 500 years.

Many contemporary sculptures are described and discussed by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia published in 77 AD. The younger Pliny, watched the cataclysm from Cape Miseno and give a description of the scene which has become classic. Volcanologists have recognised the importance of Pliny the Younger’s account of the eruption by calling similar events “Plinian”.

ll the zones at the slopes of the mountain are formed by transported earth of lava mud Monte Somma which goes down from the steep slopes in the rainy seasons through deep and narrow grooves called channels or more commonly “lagni”. The lava is composed of adesite, viscous in nature. The whole of Mount Vesuvius comprises layers of lava, volcanic ash and pumice.

The pyroclastic blast from the eruption incinerated the inhabitants of Herculaneum. Feelings, passions, poetic love, sex, homosexuality, prostitution and so forth were all part of daily life and not a source of prejudice.After thick layers of ash covered the two towns, they were abandoned and eventually their names and locations were forgotten. Following one of the most devastating volcanic eruptions, as the one occurred in the Pompeii eruption, the Pompeii Herculaneum area was covered over entirely by ash.
